Prepare photos

Description

How to prepare photos for the website – there are two main points: the size and compression

  • The guideline for the image size for large images is a maximum size of 1400 x 900 pixels, otherwise the loading times will increase unnecessarily. If the photos come "fresh" from the camera, they are usually thousands of pixels in size.
  • The file size is related to the image size (dimension) and compression.
  • A file size of about 200–300 KB is a good orientation.
  • The images should be saved as jpg if possible.
  • Use the tool ImageOptim for compression. It is great. (The ImageOptim app only works on Macs, but you can achieve similar compression with some other tools: https://imageoptim.com/online

Have a look at this page:

https://imageoptim.com/versions.html

  • If you use a PC, please test the tools suggested there.
  • Photoshop also compresses images well, ImageOptim better and more convenient. So my advice is to check out the tools.

Why is it so important?

By choosing an optimal image size with a corresponding file volume, you can significantly reduce the loading speed of the website. This has a great advantage for the user-friendliness of your website and also has a positive effect on the website ranking, because the loading speed is a ranking factor confirmed by Google.

And unfortunately we do not have special compression software on the server/in wordpress.

Adjust the image sizes

Image shows dialog screen in Photoshop to adjust image size (Image > Image Size)

  • Photoshop works well for this. But you can also use any other image editing program.
Basically we just resize the image and save it as JPG.

Guidelines for image sizes:

  • Landscape: 1400 x 900 (The value is derived from the original image size. Important is the value for the width.)
  • Portrait: 700 x 900 (The value is derived from the original image size. Important is the value for the height.)

Compress photos in Photoshop

  • Output the images as JPG from Photoshop.
  • If you compress the images in Photoshop, choose a value between 8-10 (quality).
  • If you will compress the images with ImageOptim or similar, use a high value (10+).

Adjust color space (RGB) – is rather the exception

  • The images should be saved in RGB color space.
  • Usually the photos are in RGB if they have not been converted to CMYK for printing. Digital cameras and cell phones save in RGB.
